Half term family fun in Wyre

There's plenty happening in Wyre this half term and the forecast looks great so why not get out and about?

Here's a round-up of what's taking place...

Head down to Wyre Estuary Country Park, Stanah on Monday 29 May between 11am-2pm and let the kids take part in Xplorer Orienteering. Find the hidden markers around the park and use your map to navigate and answer fun questions. No need to book! This takes approximately thirty minutes and is suitable for ages five to fourteen years. Meet at the Riverside Room.

A free and fun spring-themed art session for children aged 7-11 is taking place, also at Stanah on Tuesday 30 May from 10am-12pm. It's a fun and easy session which teaches creative skills in a beautiful setting. Booking is essential! Book your place online

This is a drop-off activity and children should be brought to the reception area at the Riverside Room at 9:45am to allow for registration. Parents/guardians to collect their child from the reception area at 12.00pm.

If you child has an interest in creepy crawlies then take them to the Bug Box Building and Walk at Wyre Estuary Country Park on Wednesday 31 May from 10am-2pm. There's an introduction to the types of bug boxes and then the children will get chance make their own. There is then a break for some lunch before heading out onto the reserve for a short walk looking at the best places to put boxes. There's a cost £3.50 if taking the bug box home (pay on day), free if box to be left to go up on site.

If you take your children to any of these events then why not explore the park whilst you're there? There's circular walks and cycle trails, a large children's natural play area for toddlers and one for older children too,a den-making area, family picnic area and cafe offering take-away refreshments and ice cream.

Whilst the sun is out head down to the beach. Wyre is lucky to have three beautiful beaches which are the perfect spots to have some family fun. Build sandcastles, fly a kite, have a picnic or take a walk along the promenade to enjoy the views. If you find yourself on Cleveleys promenade you'll notice a stunning series of sculptures known as the mythic coast. Five striking structures have brought to life The Sea Swallow book - a specially commissioned children's story imaginatively written by Gareth Thompson and beautifully illustrated by Hannah Magee. Take a stroll and see which pieces of artwork you can spot.

You can follow the Mythic Coast trail on the Discover Wyre Trails app which combines adapted and original illustration and animation, 3D digital art, poetry and music. Available on the App Store and Google Play, you can download the free app and experience an immersive digital story that brings the pieces of artwork on the beach and promenade to life. It's great fun for the kids!

Garstang's annual Children's Festival is taking place on Monday 29 May. Enjoy watching the crowning of the Festival Queen, and the morning and evening procession down the town's high street. Over at Moss Lane playing fields you'll find children's sports and races, bouncy castles, giant Jenga, children's roundabouts, Mr Tricky the Magican, face painting and children's rides. Refreshments are available throughout the day.

If it's inflatable fun you're after then head down to YMCA Fleetwood. During half term the pool will be transformed with a variety of inflatables for the children to enjoy. Y:Youth and Y:Aqua kids get fun swims free and FY7 kids pay just £2 for the fun. Please note that anyone wishing to go on the inflatable session on Bank Holiday Monday must be over eight years and able to swim in the deep end of the pool.

Just down the road is Affinity shopping outlet and between Tuesday 30 May and Thursday 1 June between 11am and 4pm you'll find a free Pirate Treasure Trail. Scour the centre for the golden coins, collect the hidden letters then return to the starting point to collect your reward. One lucky treasure hunter will even win a £50 voucher to spend at The Works! 

Kids Kingdom is happening this half term at Guys Thatched Hamlet from Saturday 27 May to Sunday 4 June, 10am-5.30pm. With a host of kiddies rides including dodgems, crazy golf, inflatable world and lots more, there's plenty to keep the kids amused. There'll be daily special guest appearences on the big top stage including Chase and Marshall from Paw Patrol, and Poppy the Troll and friends. Over in Forton at Hugo's Ice Cream Parlour and Cafe there's an Under the Sea Activity Morning happening on Friday 2 June 10-12:30. Only a few places still available so you'll have to book quickly! Kids will receive a Under the Sea activity pack with fun time in Happyland at Hugo's. Followed by a magical 60 minutes party with Princess Ariel. Includes a face painting voucher for each child. Suitable for ages 2-9 years.
