About the filming

Filming took place in May 2021, with lead actor Diego Luna joined on the North West Lancashire coastline by a whole host of other actors, including the ever-recognisable Shoretroopers.

The location was identified by Location Manager Jason Allen, who is local to the area and attended school nearby.

Series 1 of Star Wars: Andor premiered on September 21, 2022, and Cleveleys featured in Episode 7, “Announcement”.

Becoming part of Star Wars canon

Niamos’ place in the Star Wars world was well and truly cemented with the release of Andor, and even has an official profile on the Star Wars data bank.

You can also find more information about Niamos’ place in the Star Wars universe by reading Niamos’ official listing on Wookieepedia, the biggest Star Wars wiki.

If you ever find yourself in Disneyland, California, head over to Galaxy’s Edge, the Star Wars themed zone of the park, and look for special Niamos themed snacks. In 2023 guests could buy a limited edition ‘Niamos Mix’ popcorn, as part of the park’s Star Wars Day celebrations.

Behind the scenes

The team at Industrial Light and Magic were tasked with completing the visual effects to transform Cleveleys promenade into the beach planet Niamos, and bringing the KX-series security droid to life. Take a peek into the process on YouTube! Andor - ILM VFX Breakdown - Episode 7

Some time after the series was released, Senior Concept Artist, Michael Sheffels shared early 3D concepts of Niamos to his Instagram.

Niamos musical debut

Did you know that in the Star Wars universe, Niamos is not only a planet, but the name of an in-universe hit song? "Niamos! (Morlana Club Mix)," "Niamos! (Coruscant Lounge Mix)," and "Niamos! (Galaxy Mix)" were scored by composer Nicholas Britell: the Galaxy Mix is first played in Episode 7 over the aerial shot of Niamos (where Mary’s Shell can be seen)! The track is reprised in Season 2.
